A significant proportion of scientific studies consider pregnant and breastfeeding women as vulnerable subjects. The objective of this study was to analyse the perception of pregnant and breastfeeding women regarding their participation in environmental research studies. Our work is a descriptive and interpretative observational study that has been developed under the qualitative research paradigm following a phenomenological and ethnographic perspective. The study involved 173 women selected intentionally in two Spanish autonomous communities. To obtain the primary data, we relied upon 111 interviews, four focused ethnographies and eight focus groups. The data encoding and analysis was carried out with the help of NVivo 12 software (QSR International, Boston, MA, USA). We evidenced the need of pregnant and breastfeeding women for more detailed and accurate information on the risk of environmental pollutant exposure during their crucial life stage. In addition, these women claimed for a more participatory role in research studies. Pregnant and breastfeeding women in Spain ask for greater interaction with researchers and propose a dialogical relationship between valid partners. We conclude that our pregnant and breastfeeding women claim more research focused on their collective, as well as clearer, more accessible and structured information on the risks of exposure to environmental contaminants. In addition, they do not want to simply be informants; rather, they ask to be active and empowered members by providing their opinions and arguments throughout the research process.Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud de la Junta de Andalucía, Spain (reference: AP-0139-2017)Ministry of Health of the Junta de Andalucía, Spain - A-0043-2018Ramón y Cajal programme (RYC-2016-20155, of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, Spain)

OBJECTIVE To determine the Melilla Hospital Nursing Department’s attitude towards Moroccan patients. METHOD Descriptive ex post facto study. A questionnaire has been handed over to staff, on the Immigration Attitude Scale for Nursing. RESULTS In general, nurses exhibit negative attitudes towards Moroccan patients, such as: the increase in crime is caused by the arrival of immigrants, those who commit offenses must be expelled from Spain, they take advantage of the Spanish health system and too many resources are devoted to immigration. The worst-rated immigrants are the Moroccans, considering that they do not pay much attention to their personal hygiene and do not adapt to their host countries. CONCLUSION It is necessary to work with the nursing staff to change these attitudes. Future degree students must be trained in cultural skills and the care of immigrants will improve with a greater commitment towards cultural differences.OBJETIVO Conhecer a atitude do pessoal de enfermagem do Hospital de Melilla em relação aos pacientes marroquinos.

Expression and characterization of the Trypanosoma cruzi dihydrofolate reductase domain

We have cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli a 702-base pair gene coding for the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) domain of the bifunctional dihydrofolate reductase-thymidylate synthase (DHFR-TS) from Trypanosoma cruzi. The DHFR domain was purified to homogeneity by methotrexate-Sepharose chromatography followed by an anion-exchange chromatography step in a mono Q column, and displayed a single 27-kDa band on SDS-PAGE. Gel filtration showed that the catalytic domain was expressed as a monomer. Kinetic parameters were similar to those reported for the wild-type bifunctional enzyme with Km values of 0.75 microM for dihydrofolate and 16 microM for NADPH and a kcat value of 16.5 s-1. T. cruzi DHFR is poorly inhibited by trimethoprim and pyrimethamine and the inhibition constants were always lower for the bifunctional enzyme. The binding of methotrexate was characteristic of a class of inhibitors that form an initial complex which isomerizes slowly to a tighter complex and are referred to as 'slow, tight-binding' inhibitors. While the slow-binding step of inhibition was apparently unaffected in the individually expressed DHFR domain, the overall inhibition constant was two-fold higher as a consequence of the superior inhibition constant value obtained for the initial inhibitory complex

Prejudice towards undocumented immigrants has been investigated more frequently in different social settings without direct contact with it. This research study compares the scores obtained by two groups of social education students from the University of Huelva (province of Andalusia and currently without migratory pressure) and from the University of Granada at its campus in the Autonomous City of Melilla (a multicultural city with high migratory pressure). Method: A quantitative descriptive study involving a total of 157 students aged between 19 and 25 years (M = 22.02). Results: The statistical analysis showed significant differences in both analysed samples with respect to the total scores obtained. Conclusions: from a statistical perspective, we cannot affirm that there is clear and direct prejudice in either of the two samples analysed. However, there are significant differences between the two groups, although we did not find in this investigation which variable may be affecting these results.Universidad de Granada. An investigation has been carried out using an empirical - analytical methodology Ex-post fact of correlacional type with the aim to know the prejudices attitudes, the levels of prejudice and the social distance towards the persons gays and lesbian in the university students and to analyze what factors they influence in the prejudices attitudes towards these persons in the university student body. The participants reflected prejudice moderated towards the gays and lesbian persons. The men showed significantly more prejudice and major social distance than the women. The group that is not identified by any religion is the one that presents minor prejudices attitudes and social distance, I do again the Christian group and the one that it counts higher is the Moslem group. Significant differences do not exist depending on the religious practice, though the average punctuations of prejudices attitudes are top in those who answer to be very or practicing enough opposite to those who answer to be small or not practicing at all. There exist significant differences between the group of European origin and that of origin Berber, being the latter the one that presents more prejudices attitudes and social distance. The persons who knew at least to a gay or a lesbian obtained minor punctuations of prejudice and level of social distance that those who reported not to know these persons, being more significantly this punctuations in the first one. The importance is analyzed to include variable ownership group as significant factor of influence in the prejudice and social distance towards the people’s gays and lesbian.
